The Slezak Family:

Jim and Angie Slezak have lived in Oswego for the past 33 years. They have 3 biological children and 4 adopted children (3 of whom were born addicted to drugs). Angie has been successfully running a home daycare for the last 14 years out of their home, while Jim has been working in building maintenance.
In August 2004, Jim became unable to walk and could barely move from the neck down. After weeks in the hospital and numerous tests he was finally diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a degenerative autoimmune disease, which is a crippling form of arthritis. He is in constant pain. Sadly there is no cure, only medication to help control the symptoms.
In October 2004, just 2 months later they were given more bad news. Angie was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid and lymph nodes. She then received radiation in February of 2005. She is in remission but still taking medication. In December 2005, Jim took a turn for the worse. His spine began to collapse and was admitted to Lutheran General where they fused his spine with rods and screws. Jim was out of work for 4 months recovering. He still takes 15 different medications a day and has weekly injections which cost $50,000 a year.
Unfortunately, the Slezaks are also caught in the predatory lender mortgage problem. Their mortgage keeps increasing month to month. They have kept up with it for about
Update to story - Jim passed away unexpectedly on July 4th.
